Although our Maryland weather is still relatively warm, that fall chill will be here before we know it! As we look forward to a new season, it is important to keep proper wood flooring care in mind. Here are some tips for keeping your floors looking great all season long!
Protect with Rugs and Floor Mats
One of the best ways to protect your wood flooring is to use area rugs and runners and keep a mat at every entry door. Rugs and runners will protect the finish in high-traffic areas. Mats at entry doors will help everyone remove as much debris as possible from their shoes before walking on the floors. As an added layer of protection, you could even institute a “no shoes in the house” policy. To many people, the no shoe rule may sound a bit odd but it’s actually super common!
Keep a Close Eye on Humidity Levels
Moisture and humidity are two of your wood flooring’s worst enemies. Certain wood species can be more susceptible to moisture fluctuations than others. If you live in an area where the humidity is typically high, or the wood flooring will be installed in a part of your home where there is typically a lot of moisture (such as a kitchen or laundry room) you should talk to your flooring professional about what options will work best.
Cleaning Tips
Once you’ve done everything you can to keep your wood flooring protected, you will need to keep it clean. Fortunately, this is a simple process. Remove dust and crumbs with a dry dust mop or vacuum. Whenever necessary, you can spot clean with a wood flooring cleaner (we recommend Bona products, which you can purchase directly from Jason Brown Wood Floors) but take care not to use too much as the excessive moisture can damage the flooring.
