When you think of hardwood floors, you’re probably seeing that smooth, shiny surface with a glossy finish. Did you know that you can have a matte finish applied to your wood flooring and it will still be just as beautiful? Some homeowners prefer the look of a matte finish over a glossy one, and this less-shiny finish has some unique benefits!
Appearance
A matte finish reflects far less light. If you have a room that gets an abundance of natural light, a matte finish would drastically reduce the amount of glare that comes in. Lately, many homeowners have been looking for a more natural appearance. Since wood isn’t naturally shiny and glossy, a matte finish is the logical choice. If you’re going for the distressed, natural look, a wide-plank floor with a matte finish is the way to go!
Life Expectancy
A matte finish also has some major longevity bonuses, especially in high-traffic areas. Investing in a hardwood floor is not a small investment, so you want to make sure it will look brand new for as long as possible. With a glossy finish, while it is gorgeous, scratches, scuffs, dust, and any other imperfections will be evident right away. With a matte finish, you have a bit more wiggle room. It’s still just as important to keep it clean, but when the inevitable small scratches occur they are far less noticeable if at all.
Satin Finish
If you’re caught between choosing a matte or glossy finish for your hardwood, you can choose satin. It’s not as striking as a glossy finish, but it has more shine than a matte finish. A satin finish is a great best of both worlds, middle ground between glossy and matte!
