3 Reasons to Add an Edge Bander to Your Woodworking Toolkit

Jason Brown Edge Bander

Using an edge bander will give your wood projects more durability and a better look.

Power tools are expensive, and that means you need to decide what’s necessary and what’s just extra. An edge bander might not be as quintessential as a jigsaw or a compound miter saw, but it’s an important piece of your arsenal when you’re woodworking. It’s an important tool for creating a product that looks and feels finished, especially when using plywood or MDF. Edge banders such as the Festool Edge Bander KA 65 Plus CONTURO can give your woodworking projects the final touch they need to shine.

Absorbancy

Wood likes to absorb water that causes it to warp, which is just a fact of life. Edge banding won’t make your wood projects impermeable to water damage, but it will max out its resilience to absorption. You will still need to be careful with them and immediately clean up any water, but small spills won’t be devastating on wood that has been edge banded. This will keep your wood pieces looking sharp and in good condition for many years.

Durability

Edge banding makes your wood project sturdier. It reinforces the wood in addition to protecting it from water, ensuring its longevity so you can enjoy it for years. In particular, if you’re using plywood or MDF which tend to shred and aren’t as durable as solid wood, it’s critical that they are edge banded so they withstand the test of time.

Aesthetics

Plywood and MDF can be kind of ugly, providing a rough and unfinished look. Edge banding protects them while making them look nicer. A plywood cabinet with edge banding isn’t going to pass for solid oak, but it will create a smooth look that is more aesthetically pleasing than the raw material. Any project going into a home that needs to look good without costing a fortune is a good candidate for edge banding.
