Protect Your Flooring from Fading with These Tips

Protecting Wood Floors from Fading

Without the proper care, your wood floors may be at risk of fading and other damage.

Hardwood flooring is a significant investment that you should want to protect from damage. Most homeowners know how to protect their investment from the effects of dirt, dust, scratches, and scuffs. But did you know that your floor’s worst enemy might be up in the sky? When floors are overexposed to the light from the sun, they can become discolored, fade, and warp over time thanks to the UV rays and the differences in humidity. What can you do to protect your floors from fading? Here are some tips.

Change Up Furniture Placement

While you don’t need to completely redesign a room, consider changing up your furniture placement a little bit once every three or four months. This will allow different areas of your floor to get consistent levels of sun exposure over the course of a year and prevent one or more certain spots from fading.

Use Shade in Your Design

Just like your skin, your wood floors can become damaged and burned from overexposure to the rays of the sun. And, in the same manner, using shade can help mitigate these effects. Use curtains and drapes to provide cover for your wood flooring indoors, or consider planting some bushes in front of the window outdoors.

Refinish Floors Regularly

Fading and other sun damage can become permanent if not caught early. Don’t wait until the damage is too severe – have your floors refinished once you notice it taking hold. This will help you ensure that you don’t have to replace the entire floor before you have to.

Consider Replacing your Windows

New windows can be installed which have UV shields designed to reduce the amount of harmful rays that reach your floor. You could also change up the lighting scheme in your room by permanently shading the window and installing skylights.
